Google Goggles

PDFPrintE-mail

What will they think of next? Love them or loathe them, Google is certainly ahead of the curve in developing new technology. The latest creation to emerge is Google Goggles, an Android app that allows you to search without typing or speaking. Simply use your phone to take a photo of a book, a business card, a painting or landmark, and Google will retrieve search engine results about it.

I've been using this tool for quite a while on my Android. The place I find it most useful is...

Tough Being a Kid CEO

PDFPrintE-mail

Each day, Inc.'s reporters scour the Web for the most important and interesting news to entrepreneurs. Here's what we found today:

Why not everyone can be like Zuck. Despite the successes of prodigies like Mark Zuckerberg, today's Wall Street Journal reports that 20-something entrepreneurs are still finding it difficult to be "the boss." One 23-year-old business owner tells the Journal it was his shaggy hair that prevented employees from taking him seriously, and even now that he's cut it...

Why Encourage Mistakes?

PDFPrintE-mail

In my first year as a leader here at SurePayroll I encouraged employees to take risks. I stressed that if employees don’t make mistakes they’re playing it too safe and not stretching themselves to a point that will help them – and our company – grow at an accelerated rate.

I used every analogy under the sun to convey that we truly supported their decisions to take risks and make mistakes. I talked about how a baby falls down hundreds of times before taking her first...

PDFPrintE-mail

Divorce can be as hard on your wallet as it is on your heart, but a new insurance scheme might help.

At least that's the pitch put forward by serial entrepreneur John Logan, himself a divorcee. Logan's company has introduced WedLock, a divorce insurance that aims to defray the cost of a breakup. Depending on whose statistics you use, somewhere between 40 to 50 percent of first marriages ultimately end in divorce. (Click here for a breakdown of divorce statistics.)

"I got divorced several...

Leverage Virtual Workers for Your Start-Up

PDFPrintE-mail

As we pass Labor Day, it is a good day to look at the changing labor force in the US, and how that affects startups. In April, I wrote about “Virtual Workers as a Start-Up Resource” and the trends we saw then have accelerated. Independent workers make up 30% of the nation’s workforce, according to the Freelancers Union.

I spoke with Gary Swart, CEO of ODesk (#286 on the INC 500), a marketplace for online workers and companies that hire them. With over 715,000 contractors...

Obama's Big Speech

PDFPrintE-mail

That speech today? Pretty much as expected.

The proposals included an R&D tax credit, $50 billion in infrastructure spending, and a plan to allow businesses to write off investments through 2011. The Journal has a nice summary.

Perhaps more interesting were Obama's comments on tax policy. The President pledged to extend the Bush tax cuts for middle class families but to allow the tax cuts to expire for the richest Americans, a group that is said to include many small businesses:With all...

How to Recruit on College Campuses

PDFPrintE-mail

Tomas Barreto said no to Microsoft. After two summers working in the software giant's accounting division, Barreto turned down an offer for full-time work. Instead, he went in search of a start-up where he could play a bigger role, and perhaps get a bit more recognition for his contributions.

The same year, Barreto met Dylan Smith, a classmate who founded Box.net, a cloud-computing software start-up that ranks 152 on the 2010 Inc. 500 list. The two hit it off and soon Smith offered Barreto...
